Psst: The Pulitzer Buzz Begins

Editor & Publisher offers its annual look at who might be frontrunners for the 2009 Pulitzer Prizes in the 14 journalism categories. I was pleased to see the astounding investigative team from The Detroit Free Press among those discussed:

Jim Schaefer and M.L. Elrick of the Detroit Free Press seem likely finalists and potential winners for their coverage of the Detroit mayor's scandal, in which Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was forced from office and sentenced to jail time on two felonies. The Free Press reporters obtained text messages and other evidence that led to the mayor's downfall. Their work has already earned them a George Polk Award, a Shorenstein Goldsmith Prize finalist nod and a secondary mention in the USC Annenberg School's Selden Ring Award competition.

Indeed, the exposure and ultimate resignation of Kwame Kilpatrick would never have happened without the Freep. We can thank them for the $1 million in restitution that Kilpatrick is ordered to pay back to the City, and our opportunity this year to elect a new leader to the top office. The winner will likely be businessman and Piston Hall-of-Famer Dave Bing or interim Mayor Ken Cockrel--both men that, I can say with great relief, I respect.
