There's really no other way to sum it up. Well, the Committee to Protect Journalists does a good job. As usual.
As we move closer and closer to an indictment of those who murdered Bailey to shut down an expose that he was working on, it's a good time to give an awed shout-out to The Chauncey Bailey Project.
The Project is an uncommon and extensive group of Bay Area journalists who don't let people forget Bailey--or his work. They are an investigative team committed to answering questions about his death. As well, they aren't letting Bailey's story die with him.
At the time of his death, Bailey, who was the editor of The Oakland Post, was investigating the eyebrow-raising activities connected to Your Black Muslim Bakery. The Project, then, is pursuing his reporting--bringing forth new information and new discoveries along their way.
In Oakland, we’re finishing Bailey’s investigation of violence and financial fraud at Your Black Muslim Bakery, an institution in the San Francisco Bay Area for almost 40 years. Following the bakery string, we’re also being led into an examination of the bakery’s relationships with local politicians, city and business officials and the Oakland Police Department. ...
... In a time of staff reductions across all media, collaboration for a story of this magnitude makes sense. It also shows the unity and resolve that drives our response to this outrageous crime.
In dangerous circumstances, they use technology to be transparent about their group, their work and their intentions. Their work is nothing less than heroic. As The Project puts it, "Our goal is to hammer home this point: 'You can’t kill a story by killing a journalist.'"
