Detroiters: Tomorrow night, poetry takes the floor at Leopold's Books. Also: free drinks. Writers who will be sharing their lines include:
- Nandi Comer
- Mirinda Fleenary
- Jhon Clark
- Francine Harris
- Kim Hunter
- James Hart III
I've seen several of these folks give readings before; this will be worth your time. Leopold's, incidentally, was recently featured in an Associated Content article on "Downtown Detroit's Independent Business Scene."
At the age of 27, Greg Lenhoff is joining the slew of younger independent business owners finding success in Detroit's Midtown. Opened in August of 2009, Leopold's Books is already gaining a strong following. Lenhoff, like many of the other newer entrepreneurs, is still working with the community and its shoppers to figure out what the bookstore should focus on. "Our goal is to provide a curated collection of a diverse group of books. We've got a fair amount of graphic novels, but we also carry fiction, new and classic, art books, some nonfiction, and magazines," Lenhoff says of the store's inventory. Also, helping out other Detroiters, Leopold's carries local zines. Close to Wayne State University and the College for Creative Studies, Leopold's has appeal for students, but also gets a lot of foot traffic coming from Ann Arbor.
Leopold's Books shares a kinship with the other Midtown businesses. "To be honest," Lenhoff explains, "I have yet to meet a business owner here that hasn't offered encouragement or offered help. The sense of community here is important because we all recognize that the more small businesses there are that thrive here, the better it is for the city and for our own businesses."
Once more for good luck, here are the details of tomorrow night's poetry reading:
