Ed Champion has compiled a comprehensive list of independent bookshops that are alternatives for book-lovers in areas hit by the shuttering of 200 Borders stores nationwide. Even more recommendations are listed collaboratively in the comment section. Really quite impressive and certainly useful.
As a side note, I want to say that while I always prefer indie shops (online and in-person) for my book-buying, I'm saddened by the Borders banktrupcy. It is, first of all, a Michigan-based chain; the local connection made me far more amenable to buying books there than I otherwise might've been. And a lot of good people (thousands) are losing their jobs. A lot of good books have been sold. And in many, especially rural, areas, there simply is no other easy alternative to buy your books in person. There's no other way to put it: this is sad. I hope this bankruptcy serves the remaining 300 or so Borders bookstores, creating a leaner and more elegant company.
