Workshop: Breaking Into Freelance Writing
Saturday, December 14, 2013
2pm - 5pm
Facilitator: Anna Clark
Your voice matters. You have stories to tell. This intimate workshop is designed for people who want to participate in the public conversation by contributing to print and online publications. We will discuss how to generate and develop excellent article ideas, what it takes to get busy editors to respond to you, and whether or not you should write for free. We'll also discuss what happens after you get the nod from a publication, with an overview of the business of freelance: deadlines, money, contracts, taxes, and, of course, what it takes to actually write a great article that makes editors want to work with you again.
Workshop will be interactive. Whether or not you arrive with any clear idea of what you want to write about, you will leave with several drafted article queries and with good ideas of how, and where, to send them out. You'll also leave with a wealth of resources to tap into as you navigate the dynamic freelance world -- including examples of successful pitches, a reading list, and a guide to the best online tools that journalists use.
Please bring writing materials and a copy of a publication that you'd like to write for someday soon.
This class welcomes both those who have some experience with writing and are looking to move into freelancing, as well as those who are true beginners looking to translate their ideas into the public sphere.
Coffee, tea, and light, tasty food will be provided.
Enrollment is capped at 7. Sign up now to guarantee your space!
Before the core workshop, a limited number of one-on-one focused conversations with the facilitator are available for anyone who wishes to sign up. This is a chance to speak more directly to the participant's experience, intentions, and goals, and to offer more focused mentoring. Sessions will be 30 minutes long. Workshop participants may sign up for this to go deeper with their individual work; non-participants in the workshop may find this one-on-one opportunity better meets their needs. If participants wish, they may purchase multiple time slots for an extended individualized conversation.
