From a 1941 textbook, written by a Cornell University professor of agriculture, as quoted in Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma:
"Farming is not adapted to large-scale operations because of the following reasons. Farming is concerned with plants and animals that live, grow, and die."
They should put that on the food network.
