While The Spinners would go on to record some terrific songs with Atlantic in the 1970s, they started out as a Motown group. The high schools kids from Ferndale who started singing together in 1954 were first known as as the Motown Spinners and, later, the Detroit Spinners before settling on their shortened moniker.
Their 1970 record 2nd Time Around featured one of my favorites: "It's a Shame," written by Stevie Wonder. Wonder, at age 19, is playing drums, piano and bass on this track.
I'll Be Around is my favorite Spinners tune. Great group!
