... and there's a lot of outstanding publications making the cut. More expansive than the National Magazine Awards--which also has some solid finalists--UTNE picks through independent newspapers, alternative magazines, and zines each year and honors the best of them.
The winners of the 21st annual Independent Press Awards will be named on April 25 at the Magazine Publishers of America - Independent Magazine Advisory Group conference in Washington, D.C.
You might notice that many of these nominated publications made my list of Top Ten Magazine Gift Subscriptions--five of them, in fact, with four other titles coming in on the list of honorable mentions (UTNE itself also was named an honorable mention). The full list of UTNE finalists, with my personal favorites linked:

This is a great list to browse. I just want to note three titles that I'm quite fond of that didn't get linked (i.e. weren't among your faves) that you might want to check out:
Hipmama,
Make
and
Brain, Child
I'm glad to see them on the list.

I don't know these magazines! Or most of the other ones I didn't link to, frankly. I'll keep my eye out for these ... thanks.
