Sherman Alexie is spotlighted in the new issue of World Literature Today, giving him ample space to discuss "humor as a passport," as well as "the pragmatics of Indian politics, the commercialization of art, his engagement with his critics, Sarah Palin, and much more with characteristic humor, acumen, and abandon." There are also contributing essays on Alexie's work, two poems by Alexie, and a piece on American Indian languages.
Which all sounds promising and will likely propel me to a bookshop to pick up the magazine; not a huge amount of content is available online, unfortunately. Accessible pieces in the new issue include poetry by Adonis; fiction by Bernard Quiriny; and a piece called “Alone in the Woods: The Literary Landscape of Soccer’s ‘Last Defender.’” Meanwhile, Joy Harjo introduces an excerpt from Muscogee/Cherokee author Eddie Chuculate’s forthcoming short story collection, Cheyenne Madonna.
