I'm excited to announce two new media workshops that I'm teaching this fall. You can sign up now for the interactive sessions, as well as for one-on-one mentoring that we can do in-person or technologically. (It is worth emphasizing that you do not have to be in the Detroit/Ann Arbor area to sign up for the one-on-one sessions, so long as you have access to a phone and/or internet connection.) Testimonials from the evaluations of past participants are gathered up here, and if you have further questions about whether these sessions are right for you, don't hesitate to contact me.
How to Get Picked Up: Getting Your Story into the News
November 5, 2011
12:30 - 3:00 pm
Ann Arbor, MI
You have a story. But you need help in getting it told. This is a workshop for advocates, activists, entrepreneurs, communications directors, PR people, business owners, artists, nonprofit professionals, musicians, and others who want media coverage for their projects, clients, and issues. In "How to Get Picked Up," you will learn strategies for winning the interest of journalists -- not just for a one-time story, but as an ongoing strategy. We will discuss:
- What kind of press releases head straight for the recycle bin -- and how to avoid them
- How to find the journalists and editors who can best tell your story
- What to do when you get media coverage -- but not the kind you want
- What journalists expect from you when they give you a call
- What to be cautious about when you are interviewed
- How to develop a comprehensive strategy for using media, from the daily news pages to Twitter to online videos, to tell your story.
See details here. One-on-one mentoring sessions are also available for a more individualized conversation about getting your story into the news.
Breaking into Freelance Writing
December 3, 2011
12:30 - 3:00 pm
Ann Arbor, MI
Your voice matters. You have stories to tell. This workshop is designed for people who want to participate in the public conversation by contributing to print and online publications. We will discuss how to generate and develop excellent article ideas, what it takes to get editors to respond to you, and whether or not you should write for free. We'll also discuss what happens after you get the nod from a publication, with an overview of the business of freelance: deadlines, money, contracts, and, of course, what it takes to actually write a great article that makes editors want to work with you again.
Workshop will be interactive. Whether or not you arrive with any clear idea of what you want to write about, you will leave with several article queries that are exciting to you and ready to submit to editors. You'll also leave with a lot of resources to tap into as you navigate the dynamic freelance world. Please bring writing materials and a copy of a publication that you'd like to write for someday.
See details here. One-on-one mentoring sessions are also available for a more individualized conversation about your writing.
