A deeply satisfying brown box package arrived at my doorstep yesterday -- fun for its own sake. (Just ask Calvin.) But I couldn't be more happy to see fresh-off-the-press copies of the Grantland Quarterly inside: an artistic, interactive, and in-print book rendition of selected writing from Grantland magazine in collaboration with McSweeney's. The translation of longform online articles into print wasn't just a matter of hiring a copier. This book makes the most of the medium of print. It includes beautiful full-color artwork, pull-outs, mini-booklet inserts, innovative visual data, and creative sidebar content. The book is the first of a series.
A wealth of writers are curated in the pages. I'm a lucky gal in that I get to see my writing alongside the likes of Bill Simmons, Chuck Klosterman, Jane Leavy, Michael Weinreb, Malcolm Gladwell, and Colson Whitehead. Thirty-three essays in all by 28 different writers. (In my habit of byline counting, I can't help but notice I am one of only four female contributors. Heads up, VIDA.)
You can preview the pages of Grantland Quarterly here, and order your copy here.
UPDATE: Bonus points for this being printed in Dexter, Michigan by Thomson-Shore!
About the Image: I was just hanging around at the cafe in the People's Food Co-op, reading a bit of John Cheever, enjoying the medium roast, and I swear, the book just fell open to this page. **walks away whistling a little too loudly**
