They are making a movie adaptation of William Styron's first novel, Lie Down in Darkness (1951), and it will be directed by Scott Cooper. (Here's my review of the dark, strange, humid story.) But be ware of news reports like this one, about the actresses vying for the role of Peyton Loftis, that describe Peyton as the main character of the book. That. Is. Not. True. The protagonist would be Milton Loftis, Peyton's father.
If the Confessions of Nat Turner is one you have not yet read, I recommend it. Shattering and sob-inducing.
